Black American History
Have you ever asked yourself why the United States has something called Black History Month? Why do people all over the world still talk about names like Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, or Amanda Gorman?
This project is your chance to find out.
We’re going to dive into the lives of some truly inspiring Black Americans — people who stood up against injustice, who dared to dream of a better future, and who used their voices, actions, and talents to change the world. Some were activists, some were writers or scientists, and others were leaders who broke barriers no one thought could be broken. What they all have in common is that they made history — and their stories still matter today.
But this project is not just about learning facts from the past. It’s about discovering why these stories are still important now. What can we learn from them today? How can their courage and determination inspire us in our own lives?
As we explore these powerful voices from history, you’ll be asked to think, reflect, and form your own opinions. In the end, you’ll choose two people and write about why you think they are important to learn about — not just for you, but for the world.
Because history isn’t just something that happened. It’s something that lives on in us.
In the assignment Pitch me if you can, you will work with the following:
Why Black American History
We explore the origins of Black History Month and why it is still important today. You will reflect on how history affects society and identity.
Freedom and Resistance
We will focus on the fight against slavery and segregation. You will learn how Tubman and King stood up for justice in very different, but powerful ways.
Breaking Barriers
We will discover how two individuals broke racial barriers in science and politics. Their stories show how knowledge, determination, and leadership can change history.
Voices That Inspire
We highlight the power of words and storytelling. Through poetry and literature, Gorman and Morrison give voice to identity, struggle, and hope.
Strength and Protest
We focus on Muhammad Ali’s life as a world-famous boxer who used his voice to stand up for his beliefs. His courage in and outside the ring made him a symbol of protest and pride.
Writing: Their stories matter
In the final assignment, you will choose two people from the project and explain why they are still important to learn about today. You will write a short text where you describe who they are, what they did, and what we can learn from their stories.
