FIVE-PARAGRAPH ESSAY

Project: Behind bars: the road to redemption

In this project, we will explore crime, punishment, prison life and justice. We will begin by discussing different crimes and considering how serious they are. We will then learn about unusual punishments from history and investigate some of the world’s most famous criminals.

Next, we will travel to the United States during the 1940s–1970s to learn about life, society and the justice system during this period. This background knowledge will help us better understand the world of The Shawshank Redemption, a film based on a story by Stephen King.

As we watch the film, we will analyse characters, important events and key themes. Throughout the project, you will develop your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills through discussions, presentations, film analysis and written assignments.

At the end of the project, you will learn how to write a five-paragraph essay and use your knowledge from the unit to write your own analytical text.

By the end of the project, you will have a deeper understanding of how crime and punishment affect both individuals and society, and how people can respond to difficult circumstances in different ways.
